An installation transforming how visitors experience familiar places
The Pixelated Realities installation lowers the resolution of reality to bridge between our physical and digital worlds. Through a field of physical pixels, visitors see the courtyards of Kunsthal Charlottenborg as fragments.
The space is no longer perceived as a whole, each visitor’s brain automatically reconstructs what is missing, just like the eye reconstructs pixels into a digital image. While the space is “shared,” every person mentally rebuilds it in a slightly different way.
The two courtyards have two different “resolutions”: one with smaller, denser pixels (high resolution), and one with larger, fewer pixels (low resolution). This changes how clearly or abstractly you reconstruct reality.
Made from reclaimed Danish greenhouse polycarbonate, the installation shows how discarded agricultural infrastructure can have a second life in the public space. By night, the polycarbonate gently catches and diffuses light, transforming the courtyard into a luminous field of suspended pixels.
